The label of the moment

Formerly the spiritual home of useful-but-dull trousers; now, officially hip

Jaeger has evolved. In a backwards kind of way. This season's Jaeger Black collection is built around an impressive 1980s silhouette - they namecheck Azzedine Alaia, Donna Karan and Claude Montana - so strong shoulders, and pinchy little waists, and sharp tailoring, and brilliant touches like feathered hems and lots and lots of buttons. There's even a bit of boning. Boning! The whole range is dark, proper, sexy and wearable. Kate Moss wore a Jaeger blouse recently, and, it goes without saying, she looked quite fantastic. The stuff to look out for in the shops this winter are the wool pinstripe suit with high-waisted trousers (warm!), the leopard-print jacquard trench, and the gosh-that's-expensive-but-let's-call-it-a-moment-of-madness (M.O.M.) coat with shearling trim. There are some quite sophis lined leather pencil skirts, which promise to turn you into the lady you'd hope to be, and also some party dresses, which would be highly unsuitable for the kind of parties we frequent. The collection walks the generous line between grown-up and grand, which is one we like to skip down merrily most winters. In these threads though, we'll be doing it sober.
