Orient Express - Dining trips from London, Manchester, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow, etc (020 7805 5100) This combines the best cooking with the most atmospheric surroundings. And so it should, at £165 for a circular lunch or dinner trip (£140 in the sister train, Northern Belle). Wood and heavy linen evoke the glory days of train travel; mango and basil ravioli is one of the culinary transports this month. Champagne, wine and liqueur are included.

Bluebell Railway, Sheffield Park, Sussex (01825 720 801) Not just for steam enthusiasts, the restored 20s Pullman trains offer three-and-a-half-hour dining trips on Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes for £35 (four courses) and £30 (three courses); the trip costs £18. Dishes such as sirloin of beef with Yorkshire pudding are cooked on board. Children's tea parties (£4.50pp) are popular in the holidays.

The Valley, Old Station House, Corbridge, Northumberland (01434 633 434) You can remain stationary at this famous Indian restaurant based in a station house or take their 'Passage to India' (£25) trip from Newcastle with your waiter. At the Old Station, Jesmond, Newcastle, the same owners have converted a railway carriage into a restaurant, called Valley Junction 397 (0191 281 6397).
