England’s men’s Twenty20 series in New Zealand was a damp squib, with two of the three matches abandoned, the women’s World Cup had six washouts and precipitation put in a good shift in Canberra on Wednesday, where the first match of Australia’s Twenty20 series with India lasted nine overs. Their battle against the elements continues on Sunday, next Thursday and next Saturday (all TNT Sports 2 or 3, 8.15am).
The Sheffield Shield has not been affected though, and the bad news is that Australia’s batsmen who aren’t T20 specialists are coming into form in time for the Ashes. Marnus Labuschagne has made four hundreds this season; Steve Smith hit 118 in his first Sheffield Shield knock earlier this week; Usman Khawaja has got to at least 46 in three of his first four innings, while Marcus Harris and Cameron Bancroft have made a case to be Khawaja’s opening partner with centuries.
No one has won one of the big six city marathons more often than Eliud Kipchoge. The double Olympic champion from Kenya has won Berlin five times, London four and once each in Tokyo and Chicago. The next-most prolific is his compatriot, Mary Keitany, who has won three in London and four in New York City, where Kipchoge makes his debut on Sunday at the age of 40 (TNT Sports 4, 1.30pm).
The first round of the FA Cup concludes next Monday with non-league Tamworth hosting Leyton Orient (TNT Sports 1, 7.30pm). The Staffordshire side play at the Lamb Ground. A case of “Lamb to the slaughter”? Tamworth reached the third round last season, bowing out to Tottenham after extra time, having not got through qualifying in the previous 10 years.
Sunday’s matches include Port Vale of League One hosting the lowest-ranked side left in the competition: Maldon & Tiptree, from level eight, represent small towns renowned for sea salt and jam (TNT Sports 1, 3pm).

Having lost twice in five weeks to Crystal Palace, Liverpool may not be looking forward to Real Madrid’s visit to Anfield on Tuesday (Amazon Prime, 8pm). The Spanish club lead 7-4 in the head-to-head record, but Liverpool should remember that they beat them 2-0 last season.
Of the more exotic trips for British clubs in Europe this week, Chelsea take on Qarabağ in Baku, where they beat the Azerbaijani side 4-0 in 2017 (next Wednesday, TNT Sports 2, 5.45pm), while Celtic travel to Denmark to play Midtjylland (next Thursday, TNT Sports 2, 5.45pm).
